Most SME founders have something written down. A policy was put in place, a procedure was agreed and a rule was established. At the time, it made sense.
The challenge is that a document written once and left untested cannot provide the clarity the business needs when a situation becomes difficult. A complaint. A refund request. A concern that surfaces at the wrong moment or never surfaces at all because people have learned that raising it comes at a cost.
When that clarity is absent, leadership responds to the pressure of the moment rather than relying on the structure that was meant to set the standard. Decisions become harder to explain and harder to apply consistently.
You will not be rewriting it during the session. You will be listening to whether it HUMs.
Absence Policy · Terms of Service · Refund Policy · Workplace Rule · Employee Handbook Section · Internal Procedure · Complaints Process · Late Cancellation Policy
The Sound Check works through three perspectives:
You will work privately with one document during the session. You will not be asked to upload it, share it with the group or disclose confidential business information.
The purpose is to listen to the document with fresh attention and notice whether it can support the business when it matters.
By the end of the session, you will know whether your chosen document is closer to CROAK, COO or Close to HUM.
The document has kinks that are interfering with the protection it was meant to provide.
The document is commonly used, possibly overused. It exists and covers the basics but not guiding as well as it could.
The document is clearly understood and consistent. It supports and guides. However, it still needs to be maintained.
You will leave with one practical action to take within seven days. That action may be to clarify the wording, review how the document is being used in practice or confirm who is responsible for maintaining the standard going forward.
